Charleston, W.Va. Marshall University men's basketball will face the Pikeville College Bears at 7 p.m. Wednesday in its final exhibition game before the regular season begins. The contest is scheduled at the Cam Henderson Center.
Coach Cornelius Jackson described the upcoming matchup as an opportunity for the roster to build cohesion. He stated that the team's strategy relies on depth, noting that many players are capable of contributing meaningful minutes. Jackson emphasized that players should maximize their time on the floor by executing the team's game plan.
Pikeville enters the game ranked 21st in the national NAIA Coaches Poll. The Bears are considered the favorite to win the Appalachian Athletic Conference championship after posting a 27-5 record last season. They finished the previous campaign with an 18-1 mark in conference play.
Marshall secured a 101-54 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan in its first exhibition game last Thursday. Newcomer Emmanuel Manyoun led the Thundering Herd with 19 points in that contest, including five three-pointers. Center Khaman Maker recorded seven rebounds, six points, and four blocks. Thirteen different Marshall players scored in the win.
Jackson started Manyoun, Maker, fellow newcomer Colt Langdon, and returning players Noah Otshudi and Bryce Slay against the Bobcats. Newcomer Fazi Oshodi provided a strong performance from the bench, scoring 13 points while displaying quickness on penetration drives.
The Bears rely heavily on Zion Blevins, their only returning starter. Blevins, a former Chapmanville High School standout, earned AAC Defender and Freshman of the Year honors last season. He averaged 11.7 points and 6.4 rebounds while recording 46 blocks and 20 steals. Junior guard Jaylan Rigdon is another key returnee for Pikeville. Rigdon averaged 6.8 points and 81 assists last season while shooting 88 percent from the free-throw line.
Marshall will begin its regular season schedule on Monday. The Thundering Herd will host the University at Buffalo in the Mid-American Conference-Sun Belt Challenge at 7 p.m.
