India closed out the first leg of its five-match Twenty20 International series against New Zealand on Tuesday in Wellington, chasing down a target of 198 in just 13.2 overs. The chase resulted in a six-wicket victory, giving India a 2-0 series lead with two games still to play.
The rapid scoring was driven by an opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The duo compiled 133 runs off only 7.1 overs, a rate that overwhelmed the New Zealand bowling attack. Jacob Duffy bowled the first over of the chase, conceding 26 runs before the Indian openers accelerated their pace.
Abhishek Sharma hit 113 runs from 38 balls, striking nine fours and 11 sixes. He was dismissed by Kyle Jamieson after receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. Sooryavanshi contributed 45 runs from 19 balls, including four fours and four sixes. By the time Abhishek fell, India had reached 178 for the loss of two wickets in 10 overs.
Sooryavanshi moved up from his usual number three spot to open after performing in the previous match. India captain Shreyas Iyer noted the rarity of the scoring speed, stating that getting 100 runs in five overs was something he had not seen at the international level. Iyer credited the pair with exceptional play. Abhishek described the strategy as simple, noting that he and Sooryavanshi enjoyed their time at the crease after observing extra bounce while fielding earlier in the match.
New Zealand set the target after winning the toss and choosing to bat, a tactic they have used in all three matches of the series. Daryl Mitchell scored 89 runs from 52 balls, hitting five fours and five sixes. He adapted to the seam movement by moving around the crease and attacking short deliveries. Finn Allen made 40 off 25 balls, while Bevon Jacobs finished unbeaten on 39 from 23 balls to close out the innings.
The next match in the series is scheduled for Friday at Eden Park in Auckland.
