Yvonne Jeannette Jenkins, a recently elected member of the Berkeley County Board of Education, faces a misdemeanor shoplifting charge following an incident at a Martinsburg Walmart on Oct. 14.
Martinsburg police filed a criminal complaint in Berkeley County Magistrate Court alleging that Jenkins took merchandise valued at less than $500. The complaint states that store employees reported a woman concealing items and using a different price tag to scan goods at checkout.
According to the report, loss prevention staff confronted Jenkins at the store exit near the shopping cart return area. She allegedly abandoned her cart, ran from the store, and drove away in a Mazda SUV.
Police located an address associated with Jenkins and identified a Mazda SUV matching the vehicle in Walmart surveillance footage. The officer noted that the vehicle bore the same license plate number provided by store personnel. Walmart provided video showing the woman at the checkout station using another sales tag to scan items to avoid paying the full price.
A Berkeley County magistrate issued an arrest warrant for Jenkins on Monday. Court records show she posted a $500 personal recognizance bond on Wednesday.
Karla Troppman of Berkeley County Schools issued a statement Wednesday night saying the district office and board are not in a position to comment because the incident appears to be a personal matter.
