Phishing Email Triggers Internet Shutdown for Barbour County Schools
Superintendent Eddie Vincent said IT staff isolated the threat before it could spread, leaving classes running without digital tools.

Barbour County Schools shut down its entire internet service on Wednesday after a phishing email was opened by mistake. The precautionary measure halted all online systems across the county to prevent a wider cyber breach.
Superintendent Eddie Vincent said technical staff identified the issue early and moved quickly to isolate it. "I think our tech people did a great job of identifying some issue early and then we shut this thing down before it could affect anything," Vincent said. Staff spent the day probing the network to ensure the threat had not spread before attempting to restore service.
With the digital infrastructure offline, classrooms reverted to traditional methods. Vincent noted that the disruption offered a welcome pause from the usual reliance on gadgets. "This is going to sound weird, but it’s refreshing to see going back to teaching and learning without technology sometimes," he explained.
The superintendent added that he has seen other districts intentionally block internet access on certain days. He said he supports the concept of non-technology days, which help teachers and students remember how instruction worked before advanced tools became standard. Vincent said he viewed the forced shutdown as a practical demonstration of that idea.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the school system was waiting for confirmation that the network was safe to restart. Vincent said the incident is a reminder that schools must be prepared for such events at all times. He emphasized that the goal was to protect the system while maintaining a focus on core teaching and learning.
The Barbour County School system plans to turn the internet back on once IT staff confirm the phishing threat is fully contained. Classes continued as usual during the outage, relying on paper materials and whiteboards in place of digital platforms.
