Hundreds of people gathered on the streets of Man, West Virginia, on Monday to honor the memory of a local law enforcement officer.
The procession moved the body of Logan County Deputy Caden Mullins from Charleston to his hometown. Mullins was 24 years old when he was killed. He had recently transferred to the Logan County Sheriff's Office from the Charleston Police Department.
Mullins died Saturday after his police cruiser was struck by a coal truck. The collision occurred near the intersection of Route 1 and Rum Creek Road in Logan County. The sheriff's office stated that Mullins was leaving a trunk-or-treat event to drive a passenger home when the accident happened. No update has been released regarding the condition of the passenger.
Charleston Police Officer Ivan Jackson participated in the escort. He noted that many of his colleagues felt a strong personal connection to the loss. Jackson said, "It hits close to home for us Charleston guys to lose one of ours." He added that he was grateful for the large turnout of support for law enforcement in the state.
Jackson estimated that approximately 200 officers took part in the procession. That count included only police personnel and excluded fire crews, ambulance staff, and Department of Corrections members who also assisted. Community members and family members lined the streets to watch the cortege pass.
Funeral services for Mullins are scheduled for Friday.
