Nine people died and 40 others were wounded when gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud on Friday. The attack occurred in Karak governorate, located approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Amman. Witnesses reported that the gunfire lasted for several minutes.

Jordanian security forces arrested three armed suspects in connection with the violence on Monday. State television reported that officers located the men hiding in an abandoned house in Karak. The suspects refused to surrender and began shooting at the security team. Officers returned fire, wounding all three men before taking them into custody. No security personnel were injured during the exchange, and officers recovered multiple firearms and ammunition from the suspects.

The Public Security Directorate described the attackers as extremist terrorists, although no group has officially claimed responsibility for the shooting. The directorate did not release the names of the suspects or specify any ties to Islamist militant organizations. In a statement, the directorate noted that terrorism has no place in Jordan and stated that the suspects had met their just fate.

King Abdullah has instructed security forces to respond to the assault on the country's Christian minority with an iron fist. Jordan is generally considered a stable nation in the Middle East, though officials say they have dismantled several Islamist militant plots in previous years. Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya said authorities are reviewing the conditions that drove young people toward extremism. He added that anyone found to have participated in the attack would be held accountable.

The next step in the investigation involves a detailed review of the circumstances surrounding the recruitment and planning of the attack. Officials have not set a specific timeline for further announcements regarding the legal status of the three detained men.
