Five students and employees were injured when Russian ballistic missiles struck the State University of Trade and Economics in Kyiv on the night of October 26 and 27. Initial reports of fatalities were not confirmed, and the university reported no deaths among its students or staff.
The attack occurred during a wider Russian ballistic missile strike on the capital. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia launched 16 ballistic missiles over the night. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported that one person was killed and 15 others were injured across the city during the same timeframe.
University buildings and student accommodation sustained damage during the overnight attack. The university is currently assessing the extent of the structural damage. The Ministry of Education and Science stated that it is in contact with the university's management to provide necessary assistance.
Anatolii Mazaraki, the university's vice-chancellor, said that some people were in the shelter during the attack. He noted that the injured were individuals who were outdoors. Two sophomore students were injured near the student accommodation. Both sustained severe injuries, and one is currently awaiting surgery.
The university student council named the two injured sophomores as Roman Balla and Anna Voloshyna. The council called for a fundraiser to cover their treatment costs. Kyiv24 TV reported that students and teachers are currently helping to deal with the aftermath of the attack on campus.
Andrii Butenko, the Minister of Education and Science, said the attack was another instance of a terrorist country targeting educational institutions. "Whether a university, a scientific institution, a college, a school or a kindergarten, the enemy directs its missiles against children, teachers, and scientists without any pity or humanity," Butenko said. The minister urged participants in the educational process to proceed immediately to shelters during an air-raid warning.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports reported that the Ivan Piddubny Olympic College was also damaged in the Russian attack. Officials stated that children at the college were in a shelter during the strike and were not injured.
